I was flipping through motorcycle related photos about 10 years ago at a vintage paper show. Next to me was old pal Mike Hersh, scanning the sports photos bin. I pull this glossy shot, Mike glances, and approves with the same whoaa. He calls me a month later: “Remember that photo you found? well i knew it looked familiar… it’s a Peter Beard shot. I saw it in his 1965 book ‘End of the Game’. Good one buddy!”I never got any further with information about that awesome photo, just framed it.
Mike Hersh passed away last night, February 05, 2013, leaving behind his wife Ali and young son Zac… and a herd of very very sad friends. All still in shock.
Mike had an amazing eye, was behind countless Polo Ralph Lauren labels and graphic designs, was an avid collector/archivist as his fascinating blog Union-Made testifies…
Mike, this one goes to you. Make it nice over there will ya. Rest easy palx

EDIT, since Mike liked historical facts:* Check out this post card from ‘The Roamer’, a 1937 ad for Moto Bianchi, illustration by Gino Boccasile.* The bike on this original photo appears to be a 1930’s Triumph 500cc Twinport (zooming on the painted tank emblem on hi-res photo scan confirms it reads Triumph)* According to this source, the photo might ”have been shot in 1939, Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) by an unknown Italian soldier. It became the property of the British Army following his capture, and was used as their Christmas card.”
